Reflections and economics between Guatemala and Mexico

Weekends are for resting and being with the family. Going for a walk is one of the most pleasurable sensations there is because with the current economic situation, money goes like water. Ordering food is becoming a luxury and it is increasingly difficult to decide because in a few months the dishes have increased up to Q20 which has reduced the desire to eat. Unless the food is better than what my wife makes, or sometimes I make, it is best not to consume. Saving on these tastes benefits us, but what happens to restaurants in the face of declining demand is another matter.

If there is one thing I have realized, it is that in Guatemala, the businessman does not give in so easily. What do I mean by this? That sometimes he prefers not to sell rather than lower the price. Even this decrease in consumption produces unemployment. In the face of low demand, less profit, less income, less personnel.

It happens to me that when I travel, I always compare the prices of the basic food basket, a purchase at the supermarket and restaurants.

I recently traveled to Mexico, to Mexico City, and almost as if by mathematical reflex, you compare the prices of everything with ours. Today 1 quetzal is equal to 2.66 pesos. It has almost tripled.

I accompanied some friends to the supermarket and saw that they spent about 1,200 Mexican pesos, more or less 450 quetzales, which was alarming to me, especially because when I go with my wife I spend between Q750 to Q1000 and this almost every week.

But what turned my stomach was that they were almost the same products that my wife and I consumed. But it doesn’t end there.
